Collection: the female gaze

I am interested in distortion and the unseen.  I like what a reimagined likeness has to say.   I like how it provides a pathway to processing the complexities of the human condition.  After years of studying people in the field of sales and marketing I wonder about the illusion of appearances and our very human penchant for social performance.  In taking a sideways look at the genre of portraiture I challenge the viewer to question what we call reality.  With a light heart and a natural curiosity I strive to hold space for our questions of identity and connection.  Ultimately the work is my emotional response to the ebb and flow of life in a lighter and more effervescent fashion.

To quote the talented author Zadie Smith; “Perhaps our struggle is in recognizing others, our fellow humans, as real”.  I wonder about the human struggle to be brave and honest.

As our pandemic world wearies us all, ideas of communication, recognition and social isolation add an additional layer to this series.  I hope for a heightened receptivity universally through our common experience of what it feels like to not be truly seen.
